The Linen Breeches & Coat
The Linen Breeches & Coat
The Priestly Garments
Exodus 28:40, 42 NKJV
“For Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them. And you shall make hats for them, for glory and beauty. And you shall make for them linen trousers to cover their nakedness; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs.
God was very specific on how the priests were to be dressed when they entered into the holy place to minister to him. Unlike today, where people wear what they like, God had ordained for the priests to wear specific clothing when they approached him in the holy place. Failure to do this would be catastrophic. These garments were for glory and beauty, they brought praise to God and admiration from all that gazed upon them.
The linen undergarments or trousers were made of white linen. They were from the waist to the thighs. Linen keeps the wearer cool in hot climate. God was clear that one should not expose their nakedness when they approach him. God’s desire is that his priests would have self-control in their sexuality.
1Thesalonians 4:3-4 NKJV
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
The linen tunic was long sleeved ankle length, and it was made of very fine linen with fine weaving. There was no sewing except to sew the arm sleeves. This is the same kind of garment that Jesus was wearing when they crucified him and the soldiers cast lots for it because they did not want to tear it.
This tunic signifies righteousness and purity. Long sleeves were worn by wealthy people who did not do manual labour. This signifies that the righteousness we have is not through works but faith in the complete work of Christ on the cross.
Ephesians 2:8-9 NKJV
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
Interestingly, on the day of Attornment when the high priest would enter into the Holy of Holies, he would only wear white garments. The undergarments, the tunic, the sash, and the turban. There is a message for us there worth exploring.
Reflections
What is your favourite garment, and why do you love it so?

In a world where exposing one’s nakedness is not a big deal, do you have self-control in your sexuality?

Have you embraced righteousness through Christ or are you still trying to gain it by works?
